Are real projects or case studies integrated into the programme?

The MSc in Project Management at EDC Paris Business School goes far beyond teaching the theory of project management. From the very first semester, students are exposed to authentic professional situations, because it is by managing real projects, under real constraints, that the best project managers are trained.

Case studies as a learning tool

MSc case studies are one of the most widely used teaching formats throughout the programme. Each case presents students with a real-world business challenge: a project running over budget, a team conflict, an unclear specification document or an impossible deadline.

In response, students must analyse the situation, identify available courses of action and formulate structured, evidence-based recommendations—exactly as a practising project manager would. This project management simulation approach develops decision-making reflexes that traditional lectures alone cannot provide.

The pedagogical value of these cases also lies in the collective discussion that follows each presentation: comparing analyses, defending choices and understanding alternative approaches significantly enrich students’ professional development.

Real projects carried out with companies

Beyond simulated or reconstructed cases, the programme includes real MSc projects developed in collaboration with partner companies. Students work on genuine business issues submitted by professionals, often involving real stakes for the organisations concerned.

These company partnerships take several forms throughout the programme: workshops led by industry professionals presenting their own challenges, consulting or diagnostic assignments carried out in teams within a defined scope, and presentations delivered to mixed panels of academic staff and industry experts.

For students on work-study tracks, the programme follows a rhythm of three weeks in company and one week at school. Each return to campus provides an opportunity to step back from workplace assignments, connect them with academic learning and extract structured insights.

This student professional experience, built week by week, is one of the programme’s key distinguishing features.

Final project and professional mission

The final project represents the culmination of the MSc journey. Each student must complete a substantial piece of work based on a real professional issue: a feasibility study, a consulting mission carried out with a company, or an MSc professional thesis combining field analysis and academic frameworks.

The programme notably includes a consulting mission conducted with a major company, a flagship component during which students apply the full range of skills acquired—planning, risk management, team coordination and budget control.

The final defence takes place before an academic and professional jury, which assesses the quality of analysis, the relevance of recommendations and the candidate’s ability to defend their decisions under questioning pressure. This is the moment when students demonstrate their readiness to operate as professional project managers in real conditions.

Collaborative learning and feedback

Project management is, by nature, a collective profession. The programme reflects this reality by placing teamwork at the core of many projects and assessments. Students learn to divide responsibilities, manage disagreements and deliver a shared output within strict deadlines.

Working groups intentionally bring together students from diverse backgrounds: engineering profiles contribute technical rigour, business students bring customer and market insight, and international students offer alternative perspectives on organisational dynamics. This deliberate diversity mirrors the reality of professional project teams.

Collaborative learning is further enriched by exchanges with industry professionals, whose feedback and real-world experience often prove as formative as the courses themselves.

MSc student projects and EDC case studies form the living core of the MSc in Project Management teaching approach at EDC Paris Business School.
