Integration of the new “INSPEER” module (Innovations, Society and Entrepreneurial Processes)

INSPEER: “Researchers and Entrepreneurs in a changing world!”

Issues and objectives:
The aim of the group is to establish a dialogue between academics and entrepreneurs to promote the exchange of good practices and thus be able to carry out relevant research in our contemporary world.
A world where the notions of entrepreneur profiles and practices, organizational structures, proximity and environment are ever reassessed. For more information… In a global context where start-ups flourish, where public authorities create statutes and legislation favouring innovation (JEI, academic spin-off), where entrepreneurs display questions about the meaning of their activity and where territories facilitate the establishment of entrepreneurial ecosystems; what can be said about the individual characteristics of the entrepreneurs, their relations with the environment, their good practices, their strategic vision and the organisation of their company? In particular, certain contingencies provide the basis for the group’s research programmes:

  • Changes in profiles, lifestyle (Gomez-Breysse, 2016), necessity (Fayolle and Nakara, 2012), women (Lewis et al. 2017), handicap (Renko et al. 2016), and more generally, inclusive entrepreneurship;
  • The acceleration of digitalisation (Sussan and Acs, 2017; Nambisan, 2017)
  • The creation of new entrepreneurial ecosystems (Audretsch and Link, 2017; Theodoraki et al. 2018), entrepreneurial tools of spaces like Fablabs.

Changes in innovation processes (open innovation, Chesbrough, 2006, 2018; Spender et al. 2017).

Why use the entrepreneurial process as a framework?
A recent study on promising issues in entrepreneurship (2018) presents the entrepreneurial process as the leading subject of study according to professors publishing between 2014 and 2017 in the most renowned journals in the field (ETP, ISBJ, JBV, JSBM, SBE). Beyond this acknowledgement, the literature highlights that at the origin of any creation and development of a new company, there is a series of behaviours and interactions that must occur in order to develop entrepreneurial activity. For this reason, looking at entrepreneurship from the angle of the entrepreneurial process provides answers to some major questions (Davidsson, 2005; Van der Zwan and Thurik 2017). The entrepreneurial process is considered as the ability to organise entrepreneurial work and resulting from interactions between the profile as an entrepreneur, their practices, the structure of their organisation according to their strategic vision and their environment, both in the creation and development phase (Gartner, 1985; Verstraete, 2002; Kuratko and al. 2015 These behaviours and interactions are largely sensitive to context (Welter, 2011) and depends on several variables such as: demographics, particularly with the arrival of new entrepreneurial profiles (Jaouen and Lasch, 2015; Audretsch et al. 2017) and their ability to identify and take advantage of opportunities (Shane and Venkataraman, 2000; Arentz et al. 2013), as well as the relationships developed in what we now refer to as the ecosystem (Isenberg, 2011; Stam, 2015; Spigel, 2017).
How? To measure the effective changes to the entrepreneurial process, the group wishes to develop several areas of work, and proposes: – integrating research professors and professionals in the construction of issues to be developed, to create projects destined for both academic and managerial purposes, – creating collaborative, inter-institutional, inter-regional research programmes, to reach a large audience, and offer special editions in high-ranking journals.
